Vitamin D

I’m sure you’ve heard me mention the importance of vitamin D many times, and with cold and flu season approaching us, I am going to mention it again!We don’t find vitamin D in many foods. We can get it from sunlight, but we don’t get a lot of that during the fall and winter. Therefore, it’s vitally important to make sure you start taking a D supplement now or if you are already taking one, you might want to increase it.Vitamin D not only helps us absorb calcium, which is essential for strong bones, but it also is a tremendous immune system booster and helps to decrease inflammation in our bodies. A lack of vitamin D has also been linked to other conditions such as cancer, asthma, type-II diabetes, high blood pressure, depression, Alzheimer’s and autoimmune diseases like multiple sclerosis, Crohn’s and type-I diabetes.So, how much vitamin D should you aim to get each day? That depends. It is a good idea to have your vitamin D levels checked the next time you have blood tests. If these tests find you are deficient, starting with a 10,000 mg a day supplement is good.Here’s to a season of good health!
