Picking a Properly Fitting Shoe
Someone recently said to me: ‘I appreciate many of our modern conveniences such as air conditioning and cell phones, but something I could live without are shoes.’ We aren’t born wearing shoes, but modern shoes were invented as a way to protect our feet. Finding properly fitting shoes and making sure they are right for your foot shape will keep your feet and your body happy.I’ve mentioned in previous blogs, how our feet serve as a foundation for our bodies. The wrong shoe not only hurts our feet, but can also affect our knees, hips and spine. I remember when we would go to buy shoes when I was younger, the man at the shoe store would measure our feet, put the shoes on and poke the front of the shoe to see where our toes were. I don’t remember the last time I even saw someone measuring a foot at a shoe store! Here are a few things to consider when you buy your next shoes to ensure that you are getting the proper fit.• The size and shape of your feet can change as you get older. Don’t assume because you’ve always worn a size 9 that you still wear that size. Always find a place that will measure your feet before you even start trying on shoes; and make sure the sales person measures both feet as most people have one foot that is larger than the other.• Make sure the shoes fit your feet comfortably. The shape of the shoe should resemble the shape of your foot. And don’t plan on shoes stretching out over time, they should fit your feet perfectly when you buy them.• The ball of your foot (the widest part just under your toes) should fit in the widest part of the shoe. Ladies, shoving your foot in a pointed toe shoe does not constitute a proper fit.• When you are standing, make sure there is about ½ inch between your longest toe and the end of the shoe.• Always stand up and walk around in the shoe to make sure they are comfortable, don’t count on the shoe wearing over time to fit your feet. They should fit right now! Also look closely at the construction of the shoe before you buy. Unfortunately, not many things are made as well as they used to be made, so you might have to pay a little more if you want to find a well-made shoe. Look for a cushioned heel and a firm sole that doesn’t twist or bend; the upper area of the shoe should be made with soft material; it should also allow for adjustment in the laces to hold your foot in place during walking or running. ALWAYS make sure the shoe has arch support. Remember, the shoe should resemble the shape of your foot!
