Youth Sports & Injuries
Kids are heading back to school, so that means school and youth sports will be back in full swing, right? No, not exactly. You see, youth sports are in full swing all year long now. It used to be that we played baseball and soccer in the spring and summer, football in the fall, basketball in the winter. However, we are now in the age of the year-round (pick your sport) season.I’ve seen it with my nieces and nephews, and I’ve seen it with my friends’ kids. There is no rest for the weary. Kids are being encouraged to specialize in a particular sport, and that means they play for the school, they play at the club level and they travel hundreds of miles as part of the travel team. Family vacations are even scheduled around the sports schedule. In case you haven’t noticed, kids grow; and part of growing up healthy is to get rest, eat right and of course, exercise. But not exercise to the extreme as they are now doing with year-round sports. Kids’ growing bodies can take a beating with no time off for bumps and bruises to heal. I have added to my reading list a book titled Any Given Monday: Sports Injuries and How to Prevent Them, for Athletes, Parents and Coaches -- Based on My Life in Sports Medicine by noted orthopedic surgeon Dr. James Andrews, and I would encourage parents with kids in sports to do the same. You can read more about this issue, and about Andrews’ book in this article.
