Chiropractic Helps Treat Alzheimer's, Parkinson's
At Homberg Chiropractic & Wellness – your Knoxville chiropractor – we treat your whole body by rehabilitating the spine to address disease and organ dysfunction; but did you know chiropractic can also help prevent and treat degenerative brain diseases such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s?
I wrote in a previous blog about our methods using Chiropractic Biophysics. Biophysics looks at total spinal rehabilitation and posture to address disease and organ dysfunction, and not just the pain. Research points to chiropractic biophysics as being the most results-oriented and effective chiropractic technique.
Another topic you’ve heard me address before is the curve in your neck, and this is where the treatment of neuro-degenerative diseases comes in. We have a natural curve in our necks, however that curve can start to reverse from constant poor posture (think, sitting at a computer every day or looking down at your smartphone or table). That area of your spine houses nerve bundles and lymphatic delivery systems, which are essential in feeding the brain. Blood supplied to the brain also provides oxygen, amino acids, hormones and more for optimal operation.
When the cervical spine (your neck) begins to shift from its ideal alignment, stress is transferred to the nerves and the entire system affecting pathways to the brain. What you may notice immediately are migraines, mental fog or vision problems, but this constant strain on the very important neuro system has long-term effects on your brain.
In recent years, researchers have started to examine the link between the spine and brain and look at how chiropractic can be used to help your brain stay healthy. A three-year study using 100 volunteers was presented a couple of years ago at the International Research and Philosophy Symposium. The study monitored mental activity of participants using electroencephalograms (EEGs) comparing readings before and after chiropractic adjustments. The majority of readings showed improved brain function in all participants.
Another case study published in 2012 examines a 67-year-old male diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease. He couldn’t tie his shoes, button his clothes or fasten his seat belt. He visited a chiropractor because he was experiencing low back and hip pain. Following a thorough examination, the chiropractor laid out a treatment plan for him using the Chiropractic Biophysics protocol. Restoration to the normal spinal curve will reduce stress and strain on the nervous system. The patient visited his chiropractor three times a week for 12 weeks and strictly followed the exercises prescribed to him. These Mirror Image Exercises work against the reverse curve. After his treatment, the patient reported increased energy and improvement in his quality of living such as dressing, moving around and getting in and out of his car.
