Performance Taping
You’ve probably noticed many professional or college athletes wearing performance tape, the same tape that we may have applied to your injury. So, exactly what is this tape and how does it work?Let’s say you come to us with shoulder issues caused by the fact that you use a computer mouse up to eight hours, every day. We will treat those shoulder issues, but the fact is you still have to go back to work, so we will apply performance tape around the shoulder muscles. The restrictive nature of the tape will limit movement and keep the injury from extending past its injured range of motion. The tape does this primarily through sensory receptors found in muscles that detect the motion or position of the body or a limb. Or rather, your body does this because it is made aware of its limited mobility through feeling the tape. The great thing about this tape is that it still allows for range of motion, just not so much that you are likely to injure yourself further. In most cases, if you are in the middle of an event, the tension strength of the tape will be stronger for stabilization purposes. This tape is not meant to “cure” anything. It simply protects your muscles or joints during repetitive movements.
